EVALUATION II OF HOMESTEAD INTUIT WEBSITE SITEBUILDER

Sitebuilder desktop version follows this, with attempts to explain and get corrections.

SITEBUILDER PLUS (ONLINE VERSION) 7/18/13

COPY AND PASTE

The copy and paste function in the online sitebuilder will only copy the whole text box and not just a highlighted area. It appears to have only very, very limited use. (This is also true of the desktop version, but in that I can solve the problem with the ctrl keys.)

Cannot Ctrl c (copy) on highlighted text and then Ctrl v (paste) into other part of the open document, without a box coming up to paste dialog: says "Because of your browser security setting, the editor is not able to access your clipboard data directly. You are required to paste it again in this window." Then when it pastes, it loses the linking that the desktop keeps, so that I have to relink something. (That is really, really burdensome!!!!) So how do I change this feature on my internet browser (this restriction does not come up with any other online program). In my browser it looks like it gives permission, but I must be missing something. I tried lowest security setting on sliding bar on internet explorer and also put homestead into trusted sites. It still did not work.

I can copy an outside link and paste it into the linking page and it'll work with no problem.

LIMIT ON PAGES?

Can I use the online version with no limit on pages?

Any other limits and material considerations I need to know about that could cause a problem?

SIMPLE EDITING

I highlighted a portion of a link and pressed remove link and it removed the whole link, whereas the desktop version only removed the highlighted part - so I have to relink the item.

INCONVENIENCES, TIME CONSUMING

Every few saves, the program goes into a long saving process, cycling for about 20 secs up to a minute to publish - much, much slower than the desktop version.

The publish a preview keeps coming up checked in, so I have to uncheck it every time. The regular desktop SiteBuilder keeps the old option that same until it is changed.

After publishing a page, a popup comes up every time to "tell others that you've updated your site" - there appears to be no option to turn that off. So I have to say no thanks each time.

Site navigation menu was one click away, now takes three, to press insert, then press more. Then it does not retain (though the desktop version does) the last navigation menu that you used, so you have to do the additional step of scrolling down again.

We can no longer go back and forth editing documents at the same time - before they were kept under a tab and we didn't have to go back into "browse" to refind them each time - very time consuming and I have to keep notes on a pad so that I can know what to go back to. Time consuming.

NO TREE OUTLINE TO FIND DOCUMENTS

To bring up a page to edit, I have to scroll down through all files, which is harder to do than the old system which had a "tree outline" - so I could go to a broader subject and then down into section folders and then down into the actual file, very quickly, and without accidentally passing them by.

The browse function to link, however, is organized in a tree outline - that is the way to do it!

UNDO - MAJOR PROBLEM

The "undo" button does not work on the last item done wrongly. For instance, I accidentally deleted something but I cannot undo it. Other actions further back get undone.

SPACING

Try to delete a space to pull the rest of the sentence together from the next line: Example: What To Do When page: couldn't move "free" back up into the line above it (See textbox: Problem). Subsequently, tried to delete a space and then it pulled TV in front of "free" and it deleted the T, instead of the space).

START FROM SAVE POINT?

When first loading sitebuilder plus this box comes up "Start from Save Point?", saying "after you saved, we detected changes to your website. (After I just saved something and had no modification since.) "Do you want to start from the time you saved" (If I made later changes and forgot to save, then I would not do this, right? I'm not even sure why that would be an option.) " …or from the time of the last change? (This would always seem to be the option to choose unless I did some really undesired screwball changes, right?)

SAVE AND PUBLISH

When I return to work with the online setup, it asks whether to

TEXT BOXES MOVE 1/8" WHEN PUBLISHED ON INTERNET

Published page "Success In Life" publishes with poor positioning to the text boxes (blanks above and to the left).

Cannot copy parts of a page, with links staying intact, into another page!!!! (Because only one document is open at a time).

TEXT BOXES

If I am editing my master text box, the other text boxes disappear!

When you double click on a text box to edit it, the cursor does not go where you clicked and can skip all the way down the page, so you have to scroll back up to where you intended to be.

I copy a text box in one document and when pasted the link disappears! So now I can't rearrange even boxes with links. I also can't rearrange them on a page as the link disappears.

LINKS

(I need to be able to copy a link and have the link stay intact when pasted!)

If there is an extra underline blank space at the end in a link, if I press backspace to get rid of the underlined space, the whole link disappears (which was not what happened in the desktop version) - and if I try to use the "undo" it doesn't return any of what just happened!!!!!

I can't "bold" a link if it is on the same line with some regular text - it jumps over and bolds the regular text but not the link! (Fixed by going outside the ends of the links on my highlighting.)

I go to link something or paste something in after a link and it gets put in the middle of the link, though the cursor is not even close. Such as The 80/20 Principle - The Pr Livinginciple To Living Your Life On, First!. Living The 80/20 Way Living. Living the 80/way was a completely different highlighted phrase, yet it got attached! Some subsequent links go right into the middle of the prior link and some unrelated subsequent text will go into the middle of a link and/or be highlighted as a link! Then I backspace to clear it out - and the prior linking disappears! So I've got to do it over!

including anticipation and worry and anxiety and an and anxiety and anxiety and anxietyxiety and anxiety and anxiety - this is the result of trying to link to anxiety by highlighting it, while there was an "and" in between" - it seemed almost impossible to get them separated out!

Try to bold a link, press bold and it skips over to the left and doesn't do the bold at all.

WHO I AM IS REVEALED AT THE BOTTOM!

How do I get rid of "Website designed by Keith Garrick?"

I do NOT want to be identified on some of the sites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ADDITIONAL INCONVENIENCES

The page description for each page cuts off after three lines, whereas the old one did not have that limitation.

When setting the link color, the finder does not stay at the last color you used, so you have to scroll down each time.

Homestead.com is not responding happens frequently.

ABOUT THE DESKTOP VERSION

Bottomline:  Page limits cause malfunctions
Spacing is not accurately reflected upon publication (not mirror page I see
                    in the desktop version)
Summary:

Text boxes move up when posted to the internet. Sometimes the text will go beyond the box, on the internet.
Spacing on lines changes on internet.

Interaction with help crew:
They were mystified at above and level 2 was not even aware of it, however the discussion seemed to be around this site being too big, so I tried it on a smaller one and the same effects were true.  So the question is "will you repair this?"

Example:  Governing Laws Overview page: the main text box had to be extended by about 1 1/2 inches because the text extended (on the internet) below the box (which has a line around it so that we can see where it ends).  The two text boxes at the bottom were perfectly aligned vertically with the bottom of the big text box.  See how much they moved (sometimes they move even more) by the time it gets on the internet page.

Are you aware of it? Are you going to fix this?  I would like an official response since there has been no action based on my discussions yet - so I can know the facts.

Separate issue, please do not ignore the one above though:  I was informed that the software was "Sitebuilder's outside limit is right at 1,000 pages", which I was never informed of - I believe I was told it was limitless.  "all I can tell you is what the software was designed for in 1999." 'Sitebuilder was built for Microsoft Millenium, a 32 bit operating system. "  [So, now you tell me this...?]

So, in integrity, what do you recommend I do, as I am at about 1888 pages? Who can I talk to that will follow through and complete on this?????

The end of our chat:
05:30:24 [Rick H.] It is about the number of files in the file manager and how they are all oaded when the software is opened.  You just have way too many pages and associated files
05:32:35 [Keith] That would make sense in one way, but not in the limit of files if they are loaded onto the internet or are they also loaded onto my computer via the limited software (ie I have to have all 1800 go into my memory and then be accessed by my software or would it instead be accessed strictly in the cloud where there is no copy on my computer and thus no need to go through the old software????
05:32:55 [Keith] I'm pushing for a creative solution here somewhere!
05:33:13 [Rick H.] I wish I had an answer, but I don't
05:33:59 [Keith] Ok, I'll just try to figure out a way to start another site and try to cross link.
05:34:09 [Keith] thanks for your help!
05:34:33 [Rick H.] Good luck

-------
I am writing this page because I can't seem to get their attention to correct certain malfunctions of spacing!  If they do the adjustments and it works, then I'll, of course, recommend them, for the ease with which the program can be used.

The service when things are down is good.  But somehow I can get nowhere when I talk about how the screen in Sitebuilder, on my computer, will not match with what that is when published.

When I mention that to the service agents, they say "huh".  I'm not sure if they are only experienced in the online version of sitebuilder only.  But I use the one that is the software on my computer because I can navigate via a tree outline to find my pieces (of which there are about 1,000), as it is impossible (to my knowledge) to get to what I want without having to do a massive scroll-down.

I have to do constant publishing, seeing how my screen and the online differ and then artifically adjust mine to reflect that.  I am not sure why they cannot adjust their software not to produce those differences - and it is frustrating, besides taking a huge amount of time, to adjust so that the webpage online shows up decently.  Sometimes, if I revise a page, the lines magically move on their own, so I've got to do some more adjustments.

The following occurs regularly:

The text boxes will shift upward an unknown amount, so I have to publish and compare and then adjust my working copy to move it down, often overlapping into the words below (which doesn't show up online).

I have to do a hard return before a word that is close to the end of a line, though there appears to be plenty of space to the margin, as when I publish it it'll move one word to the next line and then move the words that were there before down one additional line.  Sometimes it has changed the spacing so that the words I wrote on one line are end up at the margin online though I've got several blank spaces on my line.

And then, when I do a text box, some of the lines will appear after the bottom of the box on the web.  You can see the bottom of the box above a few of the written lines in the box!

If I space over to "stack" words for a diagram, the appearance on my computer has everything lined up correctly but the page that shows up on the internet will have moved it over to the left, sometimes significantly.    A "stack" looks like this:

         sssss            xxxxxxx    -->   fffff
         yyyy            zzzzzz             gggg
        aaaaa            bbbbbb            hhhh

I have stopped importing my Word documents, as it is hard to get a revision of a page into the file manager.   I delete the old page and then I import the new revised page, with the same title, so I can keep all links to it intact without having to find every place it is linked.  Somehow after uploading it and publishing, the old page reappears!  I would love to be able to replace these, as it is easier than creating a whole new webpage to make it easier to do a revision any time I want to.

Notice how as I published the link to this page on Technical And Computer Related Resources, how Homestead slipped below the text box!
